“On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.” Luke 23:56
Saturday. The disciples couldn’t go back to the way things were. But Sunday hasn’t come yet. They were stuck in a day of waiting.
Scripture doesn’t tell us much about this day. It was Shabbat. A holy day of rest commanded by God. They couldn’t go to the tomb. They couldn’t go back to work. They were stuck in the middle. Forced to rest.
Can you imagine trying to rest your body while your mind is still racing? What could they have been thinking? Imagine the grief they felt. Their friend was gone and there was nothing they could do about it. All they could do was be silent. Be still. Rest. And trust God.
Did any of them remember the prophecy Jesus spoke? That He would die but then be raised back to life. Were any of them hopeful? Or did they let their faith in the promise die with Jesus?
Saturday represents our own uncertainty. Our own seasons of life where we can’t go back but it is not yet time to move forward. The promise has been given but not yet fulfilled. We find ourselves in the in between, in the waiting, and all we can do is rest. All we can do is be still and trust in God and in His word.
But that season is always uncomfortable. Our bodies try to rest while our minds keep spinning. We keep wondering what’s next. We search for a sign that we are doing the right thing. We pray and hope that we haven’t missed our chance. We even start to question if God’s promise still stands. We are unsure and all we can do is wait in faith.
This is the time where we cannot lose heart. This is when we have to focus. We have to dig deep into our souls and set our eyes on the Lord and His promise. That is the only way we can make it through these seasons of waiting and uncertainty. We cannot forget the prophesies that God has spoken over our lives. They have to remain in front of us.
Times will come where you cannot see the promise fulfilled. It will be hard and uncertain and seem to last a lifetime. That one day probably felt like an eternity to the disciples. Most of them probably lost hope. But God still came through so that you could know that He is going to come through for you too. Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not coming.
God wastes nothing. He didn’t waste the Sabbath that day and He is not wasting this season for you. You just have to hold on. Choose to persevere. Allow God to stretch you and grow your faith. It may not be easy but it will be worth it. Let Him teach you how to truly rest in Him. How to let your soul rest. We need those seasons.
After all, we cannot get to Sunday without Saturday.
